The other: tears of relief for a suffering that lasted far too long – a mercy. – “One funeral: tears of grief for a life lost too young, too soon – a tragedy. – “Who will I be without her? How can I be without her?” (pg 68-69). This was the poem that hurt the most to read. – A feather disguised as steel.” (pg 66). Me? Strong? I only act strong because it’s only distraction I have from the thoughts of my inevitable motherless life. – “I’m sick to death of everyone telling me how strong I am. – “When your mother begins to forget your name, you begin to wonder if you exist at all. – I didn’t realize I could be my own knight.” (pg 42). – “The princess locked herself away in the highest tower, hoping a knight in shining armor would come to her rescue. – “Where do all the memories go, the ones we hide away with lock & key yet continue to shape us all the same? – did it really happen if I can’t remember it?” (pg 13). That being said I thought I would share with you some poems which did leave a mark on me: It broke my heart to read these words as if they were hers. How I am one of many people who keep telling her how strong she is because I truly believe it yet I have never seen it from a point of view where the word ‘strong’ isn’t what she necessarily wants to hear right now.

My friend has recently been going through a very difficult time as her mother has cancer and reading this chapter made me think to her: How she must be feeling in this moment in time. My favourite chapter was The Damsel as it made me cry with the discussion of one of my most hated enemies, Cancer. Yet that being said there were still some poems I enjoyed which I’d like to share with you.

I wish Amanda wrote with more strength by adding more depth, curiosity and imagination by making her poetry more descriptive to the eye rather than making depleting short poems spaced out in a way that was seen as unnecessary at times. I gave this poetry book 3/5 stars as the poems didn’t leave me flabbergasted or amazed.
